Family having a summer pool day

A staple activity for the summertime is having a pool day. Your child might be trying to convince you to go every day as it’s a great way for them to burn through the energy they have and stay cool. However, did you know that spending too much time in the water can affect your loved one’s smile? It might seem odd, but the chlorine can be trouble to their oral health. Here’s what you should know and tips to protect their grin.

How Can Chlorine Affect My Child’s Smile?

Chlorine is often used in both public and private pools to keep them clean and free from harmful bacteria. That said, when they aren’t properly maintained, the water can become overly acidic. Kids often swim with their mouths open or may accidentally drink it!

Over time, this can wear down their enamel. As the outer layer of their teeth weakens, they might develop sensitivity or be at a higher risk of cavities and stains (also called swimmer’s calculus).

What Other Oral Risks Are There by the Poolside?

While pool water may be trouble, there are a few other things you should watch out for as well! Your child may be so excited that they start running along the edge. All it takes is one slip that turns into an accident that chips or knocks out a tooth! Make sure your loved one walks calmly when near the water.

Similarly, make sure any roughhousing is kept to a minimum. They might bump into the edges of the pool, diving boards, or even other swimmers! Simply put, just make sure they follow all safety protocols, so you don’t have to rush to their emergency dentist.

How Can I Protect My Child’s Smile This Summer?

With all that said, the best way to avoid any harm to your child’s smile is by making sure they keep up with it! Remind them they should be brushing and flossing twice daily to remove plaque on their teeth that can lead to cavities. Have them use fluoride toothpaste; that way, their enamel can become stronger as well.

When you and your loved one are having a pool day, encourage them to keep their mouth closed while they dive under the water. If you can enjoy this time from home, then make sure you regularly test the chlorine levels or watch how often the public one is maintained.

Lastly, don’t forget to schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings with your child’s pediatric dentist. They will be able to notice any signs of trouble and get them sorted out right away. That way, your family can still have pool days without harming growing smiles.
