Are you beginning to wonder if your child might benefit from an electric toothbrush? For years, they’ve been using a manual brush but maybe they need something more helpful that will inspire them to brush correctly while also eliminating plaque and bad bacteria from inside their mouth. With so many toothbrushes for kids in Garland available on the market, you may not know what to look for or even how to know if your child is ready to make the switch. Here are some key factors to help you determine if it’s time for them to start using a more advanced toothbrush.

3 Ways to Know If Your Child Needs an Electric Toothbrush

If you think your child is ready to upgrade their toothbrush and start getting a better clean, here are three key components to consider:

  1. Are they old enough to understand how to use it effectively? Some parents begin incorporating electric toothbrushes early on (children as young as two); however, the consensus is to wait until your child either asks to use one or until they are in school (ages 5 or 6). Your little one should have a better grasp on how to brush their teeth correctly.
  2. Are they fearful of these devices? Surprisingly, an electric toothbrush can be scary for some young kids. The vibrations, noise, and feeling inside their mouth may cause fear or an unpleasant feeling. If this is the case, you’ll need to hold off until they are older. However, if they are showing interest but remain hesitant, you might try slowly incorporating it, allowing them to simply hold the brush or use it without toothpaste at first.
  3. Do they really need to make the switch? It’s not mandatory or required that your child use an electric toothbrush, so if they’re not ready at 6 or even 7 or 8, don’t worry. These advanced dental instruments are certainly more effective at cleaning teeth and can help make sure little ones brush for a full two minutes because of their self-timer. However, if a manual brush is what they prefer at this time, simply make sure they are continuing to clean their teeth correctly and incorporate any special tips provided by their pediatric dentist in Garland.

Buying an Electric Toothbrush: What to Look For

Letting your child pick out their toothbrush is just one way you can help get them excited about oral hygiene. When selecting the right brush for their mouth, let them go shopping with you but be mindful of the following before making a purchase:

  • Find a brush with a small head. This will make it easier and more comfortable for your child as they clean their teeth each morning and evening.
  • Make sure the brush you and your child choose effectively removes all plaque from their teeth.
  • Invest in a better-quality electric toothbrush, as you’ll be less likely to have to replace the brush head as often because the bristles will hold up longer.

If you need help identifying the right electric toothbrush for your child, don’t hesitate to ask their pediatric dentist.
