As Halloween comes into full swing, you might be getting your child’s costume ready. They are likely excited about dressing up and getting a bucket full of candy. However, you may not be as ecstatic because of possible cavities or even dental emergencies! While you may not be able to fully stop them from eating their treats, some sweets are better than others for their growing smile. Here is what you should know.
What Candies Should My Child Avoid?
A quick reminder, candy isn’t the best for anyone’s oral health because of the sugar. The bacteria in your loved one’s mouth eat any particles of it left behind and produce an enamel-dissolving acid. So, any treats that linger longer can spell trouble, such as:
- Hard candy is meant to be sucked on. It’s like a sugar bomb that constantly reintroduces sweets to their smile. Not only that, but if they bite down on it, then it can lead to a chipped tooth!
- Sticky candy is hard to clean out effectively between teeth.
- Sour candy is both sugary and acidic! Not only will it feed plaque, but it can weaken their enamel the more they have it.
Are There Any Better Candy Options?
While you may want to take away all their sweets to avoid the risk of cavities, your child will likely protest that idea. This holiday is one to indulge in your favorite treats. Instead, you can consider giving your loved one these, which are much better for their growing smile:
- Chocolate is a classic choice that’s soft and doesn’t get stuck. Drinking some water can wash it all away.
- Sugar-free candy overall can limit how much enamel-dissolving acid bacteria in the mouth can make. This option can actually increase saliva production, making sure it all gets washed away!
- Candy with nuts is a great choice because of this additive. It’s a bit healthier by being a source of protein and fiber, but it can break off any stuck pieces of treats in your child’s smile. Just be sure they are careful when eating them; that way, they avoid any dental emergencies!
Although the options above are still treats, they can be much safer for your loved one to eat. After a night of going door-to-door, be sure that they brush their teeth before bed. That way, they can get a clean smile that’s strong against dental emergencies.
